Every application must prove the source of funds, whatever the program or the amount. The main applicant does this with a connected picture: a 6-month bank statement, letters, a statement of assets and proof of where the money came from. The applicant must also pay personally, from their own account or through their own company.
Why an application cannot go ahead without it
Source of funds is not an extra requested only in difficult cases. It is a required part of every application. The rule is the same for the contribution program and the CIIP fund, for one person and for a large family.
The main applicant goes through the FIU check, so the financial papers fall to them. If the family as a whole is funding the application, the logic does not change: the documents must show that the money belongs to the applicant and how it got there.
This part deserves care, because deception in an application remains grounds for revoking citizenship even after it has been granted. A complicated but honest account of your money is far better than a smooth but inaccurate one.
Which documents make up the financial section
Proof of source does not stand alone. It is read alongside the main applicant's other papers, and together they should tell one consistent story.
| Document | The question it answers |
|---|---|
| Employment letter | What the applicant does |
| 6-month bank statement | How money moves through the account |
| Bank letter | What the bank says about its client |
| Business letter | How the applicant is presented on the business side |
| Statement of assets | What the applicant owns overall |
| Proof of source of funds | Where the money for this application came from |
Having money versus explaining it
A common mistake is assuming a large balance is enough. A statement only shows that the money exists. Source of funds answers a different question: how it came to exist.
Imagine a reader seeing your papers for the first time, knowing nothing about you. They should be able to follow the path from your occupation or assets to the money in the account without hitting a gap. If a large sum landed recently, it needs an explanation. If income flowed through a company, the link between that company and the applicant must be visible.
Everyone's story is different. Money may have built up from salary, come from a business you own or from selling property. That is why there is no single template: the approach depends on how your funds actually came together.
How to prepare your explanation
Start not by hunting for paperwork but with a short written answer for yourself. This shows the gaps straight away and saves time later.
- Work out the amount to cover. It depends on the program and the number of people.
- Identify which account holds the money and who owns that account.
- Trace the money backwards: where it arrived from and how it came about there.
- Compare that chain with your employment letter, statement of assets and bank statement. They must not contradict one another.
- Note the weak spots early and discuss them before filing, not after a question from the reviewers.
How much you need to explain
You need to account for the money you will actually pay. The totals below include the due diligence fee. Fund figures are upfront amounts, because the whole sum has to be paid in, and $50 000 of it is the share the fund buys back after 5 years.
Your choice of program changes the size of this task. For one person the contribution route totals $135 000 and the fund $165 000, and the entire amount paid in has to be accounted for. Translation and notarization, Vanuatu citizen documents, biometrics and the passport, and bank charges are invoiced separately. The applicant pays these too, so leave some margin for them in your calculation.
| People | Contribution program | CIIP fund |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $135 000 | $165 000 |
| 2 | $155 000 | $165 000 |
| 3 | $170 000 | $165 000 |
| 4 | $185 000 | $165 000 |
| 5 | $195 000 | $191 500 |
| 6 | $205 000 | $218 000 |
Who can pay, and from where
The applicant pays personally. This rule ties directly to source of funds: the money has to come from the person whose funds you have documented. Another person's company or card will not go through, even if the owner is willing to help.
Applicants paying from Russia face one further limit: payments from Russian and Belarusian banks will not go through. Workable options still exist, and each one keeps the payment with the applicant.
- A personal account abroad.
- Rubles through a broker.
- Cryptocurrency.
- An account of your own company.
Common mistakes
Nearly all problems in this section come not from the money itself but from how it is explained.
- Assuming no proof is needed because the money sits in your own account. It is always mandatory.
- Showing only a balance without explaining how it arose.
- Trimming a complicated story to make it look tidy. An inaccuracy is more dangerous than a long explanation, as deception remains a ground for revoking citizenship.
- Planning to pay with someone else's card or through someone else's company. These payments do not go through, even when the source of funds is documented.
- Gathering papers that contradict each other, for example a statement of assets and a bank statement showing different pictures.
- Leaving the financial section to the end, which stretches the whole process.
When to start
Gathering documents usually takes 1-2 weeks, and the whole program 2 months, 3 at most. Start the financial section right away, because a 6-month statement reflects a period that has already happened and cannot be changed afterwards.
A slow money transfer also stretches the overall timeline, so plan the payment route in advance. If the history of your funds has difficult points, raise them during the preliminary check. It is free, takes 1-2 working days and happens before any contract.
Common questions
Do I need to prove the source if I pay from my own account?
Yes. Proof is mandatory for every application. Your own account settles who is paying, but it does not explain where the money came from.
Can someone else's company pay for me?
No. Another person's company or card will not go through. You can use an account of your own company.
Can I pay in cryptocurrency?
Yes, it is one of the payment options for an applicant. The duty to prove the source of funds still applies.
Who gathers the financial documents in a family application?
The main applicant, because they are the one going through the FIU check. Their pack includes the statement, the letters, the statement of assets and proof of source.
